Which would be the best organisation to take ballet exams with?

There are 2 main examining organisations, Royal Academy of Dancing (RAD) and Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD). Most dancing schools teach either one or both of their syllabi.

This is going to depend on what good schools are in your area. Some areas can be predominantly RAD and some ISTD. This is often because schools are opened up by past pupils of an existing school and the new teacher will continue the method in which they were taught. It also follows that some areas shine at one type of dance over another and become known for the skill (Portsmouth is excellent at Tap! - not saying that they aren't good at other subjects but it is a known outstanding tap area!). Anyway, it depends what you want from the exams because between ISTD and RAD there is little difference - a far greater difference can be found in the quality of teacher, so contact both organisations to locate a good teacher. There are numerous other organisations like BBO, IDTA and AAD but RAD and ISTD are definitely the top two. If you were hoping to go on further in dance then it would be a good idea to see which examining board is favoured by the college of your choice (that is if you are that committed already) as many colleges only offer exams in ISTD - others only RAD. If you hunt around then you might find that both syllabii are offered at major level but to be honest, a good training in either RAD or ISTD is more than enough to get you to a very good standard.

I take the Cecchetti Ballet Exams and I've always liked them (if you're a dancer) If you're a teacher, many teachers take ISTD's
