What kind of role is Puck in the ballet of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'?

Would the dancer be described as a principal, a soloist, a character dancer or something else? Also, is it correct that role is an energetic one involving lots of jumps? (I lack the terminology to describe it well).

In the play Puck is a central character. I assume that he is also central in the ballet.

Puck is an energetic character.

in the play, puck is an energetic and hyper fairy if i'm remembering right. you're usually around other characters and there will be lots of jumps most likely. i don't know about the ballet but i'd assume that it'd be like this judging by the play.
You cannot describe a 'role' by someone's level in a company. This role (Puck) could be danced equally well by a Principal or a Soloist. It will depend on the Artistic's Director's taste, the availability of certain dancer(s) and other logistical issues.

You would also not give this important role to a character dancer, although it's not impossible (but usually, character dancers are older, less able to sustain such a long role).

It involves lots of jumps, so the role can definitely be described as 'energetic'. It would require the dancer to be good in 'grand allegro' work (generally, a quality that is required of all male dancers).
First and foremost, A Midsummer Night's Dream is a Shakespeare Play.

If you want to understand ANY dance character adapted from a literary work, you should read the literature. Shakespeare is a bit heavy for some people, but there are modern translations available. Visit the library; or if that's too much trouble, check this Wiki page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puck_(Shake...
