What does "dancing for a company" mean in ballet?

Everybody's saying that ballerinas have to "dance in/for a company".. what's a "company" in dance?

Is it kinda like if you work a certain store you wear a lot of that store's clothing? Or is like a theater that you get assigned to dance for.. kinda like an opera star only sings at one opera house? I've been hearing it a lot and I'm not sure what the whole "dance for a company" thing is all about. I know... this is probably a very stupid question, but i'm quite new in the world of dance.

Every ballerina is associated with a company, like the Houston Ballet, or the New York Ballet, etc etc. That is what a company is. So, to be a professional ballerina, a company (let's say the Houston ballet) holds auditions and picks the best ballerinas to perform for them. There are many types of companies, some are huge, others are smaller, less well known.

It is probably an agency or something like that

Maybe like how actors have a specific company they work for.
Ballet business are called Companies, so if you dance for them you are an employee. Unless it is a non paying one, then you are a volunteer dancer.
it means you have ajob no matter what ballet production they're performing. kind of like an actor having a contract with a movie studio
Twinka Tee hit it right on the head.
